Student Discovery Series

Great performing arts experiences for students of all ages! Our weekday Student Discovery series provides opportunities to see professional dance, theatre and music artists, expanding minds and making connections across life, curriculum and the arts. Performances are approximately one-hour long, and most feature a post-show conversation with the artists.

A Dance Village Odyssey

Nov 5 @ 10:30 AM

Nrityagram, the renowned and “most exciting Indian classical dance ensemble" (Fjord Review), returns to our stage with A Dance Village Odyssey. This engaging lecture-demonstration introduces young audiences to Odissi, one of the oldest dance traditions in the world, known for its rapt facial expressions, lyrical movement and precise gestures. Featuring excerpts from Nrityagram’s vast repertoire, this magical journey to Eastern India illustrates the dance form’s beauty and highlights its connections to motifs from ancient Odisha temple sculpture as well as the poetry of Oriya music.

“With innovative flair and theatricality,” New Zealand’s Black Grace returns to our stage for the first time in 12 years, after wowing audiences worldwide with “a carefully constructed form of rigor and sophistication” (The Boston Globe). Masterfully blending contemporary and Samoan dance, the company embodies “incredible speed and stamina, and exhilarating, seemingly inexhaustible energy” (The New York Times). The program features highly physical works rooted in the rich storytelling traditions of the South Pacific and performed with raw finesse, beauty and power.
