The Women’s Bandura Ensemble of North America will present a concert of Ukrainian music, “Songs from Near and Far” on May 16, 2026 at 7:00 PM at the Iron Gate Theater through Penn Live Arts in Philadelphia, PA.
The program will feature the Ukrainian bandura, a stringed instrument combining lute and harp elements, rooted in Ukraine’s oral tradition of storytelling and song. The Women’s Bandura Ensemble of North America is composed of female musicians dedicated to preserving and performing Ukrainian musical heritage.
Our program “Songs from Near & Far” celebrates the remarkable versatility of the bandura, showcasing its ability to transcend genres, eras, and cultures. The program will include everything from nostalgic Ukrainian folk songs to retro tunes to a unique medley blending Gershwin’s “Summertime” with a Ukrainian lullaby. Audiences will enjoy performances by both the full ensemble and smaller chamber groups, highlighting the bandura's wide range of sounds.
