This masterclass introduces participants to the fundamental movements and body-training techniques of Odissi as evolved and practiced at Nrityagram.
The session begins with a short warm-up, followed by an introduction to the Odissi classical dance tradition and its distinctive movement vocabulary. Participants will explore the foundational elements of Odissi technique, including Chārīs (movements across space), Utplavanas (jumps) and Bhramaris (spins). The class will also introduce the two characteristic postures of Odissi: Chauka, a strong square stance, and Tribhangi, the three-bend posture that gives Odissi its distinctive sculptural quality.
The class will be led by Pavithra Reddy, assisted by Anoushka Rahman, Namaha Mazoomdar and Daquil Miriyala, with live music by members of the Nrityagram Music Ensemble. The workshop is open to intermediate to advanced high school, university and post-graduate/professional dancers. Please wear comfortable dance attire. This masterclass is free, but advance registration is required.
