As part of our Martha Graham Dance Company performances, which feature dancers from PHILADANCO!, enjoy a companion exhibition tracing the histories of both companies. Curated by dramaturg Ain Gordon and designed by Dr. Azsaneé Truss, this exhibition offers a behind-the-scenes look at these illustrious companies while also exploring how this history inspired Tommie-Waheed Evans in the creation of his co-commissioned work, in case of fire, speak, which will receive its world premiere May 29-30. Featuring historical documents, photographs, video and design materials, the exhibition puts Graham’s 1938 masterwork, American Document, in conversation with PHILADANCO!’s commitment to preserving and advancing the work of Black artists to consider Graham's enduring question: "What is an American?"
Opening Reception:
Please join us for the exhibition's opening reception on Thursday, March 19 at 6 PM. This event is free and open to the public. Registration is requested but not required.
